When Art Left the Scene: Aftercare for project based cultural events, 2025
Seminar at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar
In collaboration with Martin Leibinger and tutored by Jun.-Prof. Dr. Alexandra Toland and Prof. Suse Weber
Bauhaus Module Summer Semester 2025 - Here
Funded by Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in its thematic line Beyond Now - Umwelten - Here / Here
The course focused on analysing what remains when interdisciplinary artistic projects end, in order to develop methodologies for managing their social, political and environmental impact.
While the cultural sector becomes more involved in societal discourses, artistic events increasingly function through project-based engagements, with limited temporal structures. The seminar followed the question, what do artistic projects leave behind and how to provide care for a sustainable after life. As a case study, we learn from contemporary art events by interviewing art world professionals to discuss current demands and limitations. Subsequently, the students developed ideas relating their own work to questions of artistic after care.
From large-scale exhibitions like Manifesta and the Venice Biennale to the inner workings of socially engaged collectives, the role of grassroots initiatives, material reuse in artistic production, or sustainable gazes and archival methods — the students of the Bauhaus.Module investigate the lingering impact of diverse artistic practices. In collaboration with professionals from across the art world, they reflect on the aftermath of art-making beyond its public display.
Through qualitative research and semi-structured interviews, the student researchers explore methods and ideas of care as a foundation for future artistic and curatorial work that is more conscious of lasting dynamics and impacts. Their findings take shape in interdisciplinary video essays presented during Summaery2025 in Kiosk.6, contributing to the evolving project Biennial of Care within the thematic framework Beyond Now – Environments.
